Digital Skills
Subject Overview
Digital Skills is a core element of the curriculum and plays a vital role in preparing learners for learning, life and employment in an increasingly digital world. The curriculum supports learners to use technology safely, confidently and independently, enabling them to access learning, communicate effectively, and participate fully in modern society.
Digital skills learning is closely linked to real‑life application, supporting learners to develop confidence with everyday technology used in education, employment and daily living. This includes building awareness of online safety, responsible digital behaviour and the practical use of digital tools to support independence and future progression.
Accreditation and Qualifications
Digital Skills accreditation is offered through pathways designed to reflect individual starting points, readiness and learning needs. Placement onto qualification routes is informed by assessment and reviewed regularly to ensure it remains appropriate, accessible, and meaningful.
Learners may work towards:
- Essential Digital Skills Qualification (EDSQ) at Entry Level and Level 1, supporting learners to develop the skills required to use digital devices, applications, and online services confidently and responsibly.
- AQA Unit Award Scheme (UAS) – for learners who are not yet able to access EDSQ, ensuring that progress and achievement in digital learning are recognised through flexible, meaningful accreditation.
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Teaching and learning focus on practical, hands‑on digital tasks, supported by guided instruction and real‑world application. Learners develop skills through using technology for communication, accessing information, problem‑solving, and completing everyday tasks.
Assessment is matched to learner need and the chosen accreditation route, and may include practical demonstrations, portfolio evidence, accredited unit achievement, and ongoing observation of skill development and confidence.
Employability, Life Skills and Progression
Digital Skills supports learners to develop independence, employability, and confidence in using technology for everyday life. The subject plays a key role in preparing learners for further learning, vocational pathways and employment, while also enabling safe, responsible, and active participation in modern digital society.
